Finding trust in a changing world

by Lesley Pitts, CS

Christian Science Practitioner
Member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship

Is there anything that we can truly rely on? Finding a spiritual basis of trust enables us to turn to a divine presence whenever we need it. The love, goodness, and intelligence of God never change and are always available. The more we discover of God’s love and care for us, the more we can confidently turn to this divine presence and find our lives transformed and healed–and our families, communities, and the whole world benefit, too. Anyone can learn how to lean into God’s trustworthiness.

About our speaker

It was during high school that the direction of Lesley’s life changed. Although she was raised as a Christian Scientist, it wasn’t until she experienced the joy of helping someone during a youth club outing that Lesley finally understood what it took to love unselfishly. This set her on a new path. She became aware that nursing qualities of willing service, patience, gentleness, and compassion were expressed all around her as she grew up and that she wanted to live them, too. They’ve woven themselves into every activity she has undertaken since then.

For example, Lesley served as a Christian Science nurse for more than 30 years, mostly in the United Kingdom. This work brought her to Boston in the United States to work in the Christian Science Nursing Activities department. Later, she was part of the team that established The Mary Baker Eddy Library. Her nursing qualities were put to good use in organizing and caring for its collections–shared with the public for the first time. She served as Executive Manager and President of the Library for six years.

Working at the Library and becoming more familiar with Eddy’s remarkable accomplishments as the founder of a religious movement increased Lesley’s desire to better practice Christian Science in her own life and help others through her healing practice and lecturing.

Lesley believes that her unusual career path illustrates the idea that following God’s lead is a more trustworthy foundation for living than relying on society’s expectations or other people’s opinions.

Welcome to our

2024 fall lecture!

WELCOME! Our church is located in the historic area of Wilmington, North Carolina. The church began holding services in the early 20th century and continues to support the individual and collective pursuit of spiritual healing and worship through its two weekly services, outreach programs, literature, Reading Room and Sunday School. This church follows both the teachings and practice of the Master, Christ Jesus, and the founder and discoverer of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. We conduct a Sunday service at 10:30 AM, and a Wednesday evening testimony meeting at 7:30. We welcome all children under the age of 20 to our Sunday School, which meets at the same time as the Sunday service. Child care for very young children is provided at all church services.
SERVICES – We welcome everyone to our services. The Sunday service culminates a week of study of the Christian Science Lesson‑Sermon, consisting of readings from the King James version of the Bible, and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by  Mary Baker Eddy. On Sundays, two members conduct the service, reading aloud the Bible Lesson‑Sermon for that week as found in the Christian Science Quarterly. Music for the service includes three hymns sung by the congregation, a solo, and an organ prelude, offertory, and postlude. A collection is taken during the service. The Wednesday evening meeting begins with topical readings from the Bible and Science and Health followed by a time where anyone can give gratitude for healings or inspiration they’ve experienced from their study of Christian Science. This healing service includes the singing of 3 hymns.
SUNDAY SCHOOL – Sunday School is held at the same time as the Sunday service. Our Sunday School teaches how to turn to God effectively in our daily lives to solve individual problems and those in the world around us. Early lessons include the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, and the Sermon on the Mount. Older students are taught healing concepts and methods to help them deal with daily issues. All of these lessons focus on God who is all‑loving, who helps us overcome all types of problems, and does not punish us. The Sunday School and the church services help build our trust in God who can help us deal successfully with any issue. We warmly welcome you, whether you live in our community or are enjoying a vacation along our beautiful coastline!
READING ROOM – What is a Christian Science Reading Room?  You’ll find here a short introduction to what you can expect when you walk into one.

Our church maintains a Reading Room that is open to the public Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 2 PM, Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 7:15, and by appointment. The Reading Room is located in the church building at 1620 Chestnut Street. Anyone can come in and read, study, pray, or simply talk to an experienced Christian Scientist about spirituality and healing. They can purchase or order Christian Science literature including the Bible, the Christian Science textbook Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, which is a practical guide to spiritual living and, with the Bible, a “self‑improvement” manual of the highest order.

Christian Science periodicals including the print version of The Christian Science Journal, the Christian Science Sentinel, the Christian Science Quarterly, and The Christian Science Monitor are available for purchase. The Christian Science Journal also contains contact information for Christian Science practitioners throughout the world. These individuals devote their full time to the healing ministry of Christian Science and are available to give Christian Science treatment through prayer at any time. The Christian Science Monitor is an international newspaper widely respected for its thorough and unbiased reporting, available in a daily online format or weekly print format.

In the Reading Room you can also access JSH Online, a gateway to 130 years of articles in The Christian Science Journal, the Christian Science Sentinel, and The Herald of Christian Science, as well as other online written and audio content from the Christian Science Publishing Society.Christian Science Reading Room Intro

LECTURES AND SPECIAL EVENTS – Once a year, this branch church sponsors a free public talk by experienced Christian Science teachers or practitioners on spirituality and healing.  These individuals are members of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship and are available to conduct these public talks in communities around the world.
